The Complete Guide to Dental Implants in Nigeria

Losing a tooth is more than a cosmetic inconvenience. It affects how you chew, how you speak, and over time, it can cause the surrounding teeth to shift and the jawbone to deteriorate. For decades, the primary options for replacing missing teeth were dentures and bridges. While these solutions still have their place, dental implants have emerged as the gold standard — the closest thing modern dentistry can offer to regrowing a natural tooth.

As dental professionals in Nigeria, one of the most common questions we hear at Purple Ice Consults Dental Clinic in Port Harcourt is: "Are dental implants available here, and can I afford them?" The answer to the first question is a definitive yes. The answer to the second requires a deeper conversation about value, longevity, and investment in your health.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. Titanium is used because of its remarkable biocompatibility — the human body does not reject it. Instead, the bone grows around and fuses with the titanium surface in a process called osseointegration. This creates an incredibly strong and stable foundation for a replacement tooth.

The complete implant restoration consists of three parts: the implant fixture (the titanium post embedded in bone), the abutment (a connector piece that sits on top of the implant), and the crown (the visible tooth-shaped restoration that attaches to the abutment).

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Not everyone is an immediate candidate for dental implants. Several factors determine eligibility:

Adequate Bone Volume. There must be enough jawbone to support the implant. If bone has been lost due to prolonged tooth absence, periodontal disease, or trauma, a bone grafting procedure may be needed before implant placement.

Healthy Gums. Active periodontal disease must be treated and controlled before implant surgery. Placing an implant in diseased tissue is a recipe for failure.

General Health. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, certain autoimmune conditions, and ongoing radiation therapy to the head and neck area can all compromise healing and increase the risk of implant failure. These conditions do not necessarily disqualify you, but they must be managed carefully.

Age. Implants are generally not placed in patients whose jaws are still growing, typically those under eighteen years of age. There is no upper age limit — healthy older adults can be excellent candidates.

The Implant Procedure: Step by Step

Consultation and Planning. The process begins with a thorough clinical examination and radiographic assessment. We use dental X-rays and, when available, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to evaluate bone quality, quantity, and the proximity of important anatomical structures like the inferior alveolar nerve and the maxillary sinus.

Implant Placement. Under local anesthesia, the gum tissue is reflected to expose the bone. A series of precisely sized drills create an osteotomy — a channel in the bone — into which the implant fixture is inserted. The gum tissue is then sutured closed over or around the implant.

Healing Period. Osseointegration takes approximately three to six months. During this time, the bone bonds with the titanium surface. The patient may wear a temporary restoration for aesthetics.

Abutment Placement and Impression. Once integration is confirmed, the abutment is connected to the implant, and an impression is taken to fabricate the final crown.

Final Restoration. The custom-made crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment. The result is a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Cost of Dental Implants in Nigeria

The cost of dental implants in Nigeria varies widely depending on the implant system used, the complexity of the case, and the location of the practice. As of 2024, a single implant with crown can range from approximately 350,000 to 1,500,000 Naira. Premium implant systems from established manufacturers such as Straumann, Nobel Biocare, or Osstem tend to cost more but come with extensive research backing, predictable outcomes, and long-term warranties.

While this may seem expensive compared to a denture or bridge, consider that a well-maintained dental implant can last a lifetime. Dentures need to be relined or replaced every five to seven years, and bridges typically last ten to fifteen years before requiring replacement. Over a twenty-year horizon, implants often prove to be the most cost-effective option.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth: regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. While the implant itself cannot get a cavity, the gum tissue around it can become inflamed — a condition called peri-implantitis — if oral hygiene is neglected. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to monitor the implant and address any issues early.

At Purple Ice Consults Dental Clinic, we guide our patients through every step of the implant journey, from initial assessment to long-term maintenance. Our commitment is to provide world-class restorative dentistry right here in Port Harcourt, so you do not have to travel abroad for quality care.
